We'll just put this out there. If you're interested in serious off-roading, go ahead and stop reading and get the Jeep Renegade. Still with us? If you're NOT a serious off-roader, there's a serious contest between the Mitsubishi Outlander and Jeep Renegade. In this comparison guide, we'll try to get to the bottom of which is the better purchase for those who navigate the urban jungle, rather than, well, actual jungles. It's not an easy choice, but we'll evaluate both and declare a winner.
What's New for 2019?
We should preface this article by saying that each of these sport utility vehicles just received an uplift. The Mitsubishi Outlander's refreshed styling, including restyled LED headlights that look like they have a triangular pattern when viewed from outside. Mitsubishi upgraded the tuning and suspension for a more comfortable ride and better handling. And there's something for the kids in the form of new climate control vents in the back seats.
Meanwhile, the Jeep Renegade got some updates for its 2019 model as well. The headlights are new, with an LED outer ring and new elements within. The lower grille has more going on. And the taillights have the familiar X shape of other Jeep vehicles. The Renegade also has new engine options and new active safety features. So the Renegade got the more thorough upgrade but which is the better SUV?
The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander boasts plenty of tech options. For starters, on the base ES trim, there's a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with rearview camera. There are optional systems, like rear-seat entertainment and infrared wireless headphones. Step up to the SE trim and add keyless entry, Sirius XM radio, optional remote engine start, and optional front and rear park assist sensors. The LE trim adds Blind Spot Warning with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist. The SEL trim throws in a power remote liftgate and push button start. Finally, the tier-topping GT trim gives you a multi-view camera system along with optional features like heated steering wheel, premium 9-speaker audio system, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.
The 2019 Jeep Renegade is also admirably equipped with technology. The base trim comes standard with keyless entry, voice recognition, Uconnect infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, 6-speaker audio system, and heated mirrors. Upgrade to the Latitude and get dual-zone automatic AC, voice-activated navigation, and Sirius XM radio. The Renegade Limited offers heated front seats. There seems to be slightly more tech on the Outlander, but the Renegade has all the essentials, so we're calling this one a tie.
Value: 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander
While the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander costs $1400 more than the Jeep Renegade, you get more car for your money with the Outlander. That's because the Outlander is a compact SUV while the Renegade is a subcompact. The Outlander measures 18 inches more in length, making room for a third row. That means the Outlander seats seven while the Renegade only seats five. That also means that the Outlander, when properly equipped, can tow up to 1,500 pounds more than the Renegade. You may pay a little more, but you get more utility and more car for your money. That's why the Outlander is our choice in this head-to-head comparison.
